Jesus in Matthew
Matthew 1–28
Matthew moves Jesus through the land in a few large steps and says when each one happens: born in Bethlehem and brought up in Nazareth, baptized at the Jordan, settled at Capernaum by the sea, a ministry spent in Galilee and the towns around it, one road south through Judea beyond the Jordan and Jericho, a last week in Jerusalem, and a mountain in Galilee at the end. Every chapter that names a place has a map.
Bethlehem, Egypt and Nazareth
Matthew 1–2
The genealogy counts its generations to and from the deportation to Babylon. Jesus is born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the east ask for him in Jerusalem, and Joseph takes the child to Egypt until Herod is dead, then settles in Nazareth in the district of Galilee.
The Jordan, and the move to Capernaum
Matthew 3–4
John preaches in the wilderness of Judea and baptizes in the Jordan, and Jesus comes from Galilee to be baptized. After the temptation and John's arrest he leaves Nazareth for Capernaum by the sea, calls four fishermen, and crowds follow him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and beyond the Jordan.
Galilee and the lake
Matthew 5–18
Most of the Gospel happens around one lake. Jesus teaches, heals and crosses the sea between Capernaum and the country of the Gadarenes, Gennesaret and Magadan; he goes once to the district of Tyre and Sidon and once north to Caesarea Philippi, where he first tells the disciples he must go to Jerusalem.

The road to Jerusalem
Matthew 19–20
He leaves Galilee for the region of Judea beyond the Jordan, tells the twelve on the way up that the Son of Man will be handed over in Jerusalem, and heals two blind men as the crowd leaves Jericho.
Jerusalem, and Galilee again
Matthew 21–28
From Bethphage and the Mount of Olives into the city and the temple, a night at Bethany, the Passover, Gethsemane, the trial, Golgotha and a tomb hewn in the rock. The risen Jesus sends the eleven back to Galilee, and the book ends on the mountain he had directed them to.
