Two days before the Passover, a woman pours expensive ointment on Jesus' head in the house of Simon the leper at Bethany, and Judas goes to the chief priests for thirty pieces of silver. Jesus sends his disciples into the city to prepare the Passover, eats it with the twelve, then goes out to the Mount of Olives and tells them he will go before them to Galilee after he is raised. He prays in a place called Gethsemane, is arrested there and taken to Caiaphas the high priest, where Peter, called a Galilean and a companion of Jesus of Nazareth, denies him three times.

Regions on this map

Verses 32, 69 and 71: Galilee, where Jesus says he will go before his disciples, and where Peter is placed by the word "Galilean"; and Nazareth, in the servant girl's "Jesus of Nazareth."

  • Named twice: Jesus says that after he is raised he will go before the disciples to Galilee (verse 32), and a servant girl tells Peter, "You also were with Jesus the Galilean" (verse 69). Galilee is the northern region around the lake, where Jesus' ministry began.

the northern region as a whole; the representative point the sources give falls in the Sea of Galilee

  • Named in another servant girl's words to the bystanders: "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth" (verse 71). The town in lower Galilee where Jesus grew up; all 500 votes put it at modern Nazareth.

    Today: Nazareth, lower Galilee, Israel

Verses 6, 18, 30 and 36: Bethany where Jesus is anointed, the city where the Passover is prepared, the Mount of Olives, and Gethsemane where he prays and is seized.

  • Jesus is at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper when a woman pours an alabaster flask of ointment on his head (verses 6-7). The gazetteer puts it at al-Eizariya, just east of Jerusalem, with 753 votes.

    Today: al-Eizariya, east of Jerusalem

  • After the Passover meal and a hymn they go out to the Mount of Olives (verse 30), where Jesus tells them they will all fall away that night. It is the ridge east of Jerusalem; all 500 votes put it there.

Today: the ridge east of Jerusalem's Old City

  • "A place called Gethsemane" (verse 36), where Jesus prays three times while the disciples sleep, and where Judas comes with the crowd and Jesus is seized (verses 36-50). Matthew places it after they go out to the Mount of Olives; the gazetteer's point, with 500 votes, is at the foot of the Mount of Olives, facing the city.

Today: the foot of the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem's Old City

  • Not named in this chapter but meant by "the city" (verse 18), where Jesus sends his disciples to a certain man to prepare the Passover. The palace of the high priest Caiaphas (verses 3 and 57) and the temple where Jesus taught day after day (verse 55) are there as well.

    Today: Jerusalem
