Genesis 45:25: The only journey on this road anybody makes with good news

"So they went up out of Egypt and came to the land of Canaan to their father Jacob." They have been told. The Egyptian sent every servant out of the room and broke down so loudly that Pharaoh's household heard it through the walls, and said I am Joseph; does my father still live? And his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence. Then the rest of it: it was not you who sent me here, but God — a sentence that undoes twenty-two years without pretending they did not happen. So this is the third time the road has been walked in three chapters and the first time anyone on it is carrying anything worth having. Twenty donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt and ten with grain and bread for the journey; wagons Pharaoh himself ordered out; changed clothes for all of them and five sets for Benjamin, which is the family's old habit of dressing one brother better than the rest, done this time by the brother it was done to. And a message to give an old man, with one instruction attached that is nearly funny: do not quarrel on the way. They do get home, and they tell him, and his heart goes numb because he does not believe them. It takes the sight of the wagons — the physical fact of Egyptian transport standing in a Canaanite field — to convince him. Then the spirit of their father Jacob revived, and he says the sentence the rest of the book turns on: it is enough; Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die. The map draws both countries, because the verse names both: Egypt's red at the start of the line and Canaan's olive at the end of it, with the leg itself in Canaan's colour because it is a homecoming. Both pins are representative points for whole lands, which is why the frame is wide enough to look silly and is exactly right.
