Genesis 31:47: One heap of stones, with a name in each man's language

"Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob called it Galeed." The two names mean the same thing — heap of witness — and the verse is the first place in the Bible where Aramaic and Hebrew are set side by side and the difference is the news. Laban's household speaks one; Jacob's speaks the other; they have lived together for twenty years and they name the same pile of rocks in two languages. From this verse on the two branches of the family are two peoples, and the heap is where that is decided. A third name follows at 31:49 — Mizpah, watchpost — and it is the one that stuck to the ground, which is why the sources file the site under it. 227 votes put it at Jel'ad in the Gilead hills, and the identification resolves four ways inside that neighbourhood, so the pin is the leading reading and not a settled fact. The name Gilead itself is heard in Galeed; the writer is explaining a district's name as much as a monument's. What is agreed over it is a border, and it is the only frontier this family ever draws. Neither man is to pass the heap to harm the other. It is not a treaty between nations with armies; it is two households with flocks agreeing where one stops. Laban gets up early, kisses his grandchildren, blesses them and goes home, and the text never mentions him again. That makes this the northern limit of everything that follows. Everyone in the story from here on is south of this pile of stones, and the road back up it is not travelled again in Genesis.
