When should women stop teaching boys in the church?

Answered from the commentary of Leslie M. Grant, Raymond K. Campbell, C. J. Davis and 3 others

If boys are still in childhood, women may teach them; when they are grown men, women should stop teaching them in the church, for public teaching of men is forbidden to women. The passages give no age at which a boy becomes a man, and one says that there is no formal rule for when children should sit apart from their parents at meetings. Most of the passages forbid women to teach men publicly, while some extend the prohibition to any teaching, whether or not men are present; others allow women to teach children, women, or both.

Raymond K. CampbellThe Church Of The Living God

Man was first formed and is God's representative and head and should maintain his rightful position as leader and teacher. Because Eve took the lead in transgressing and was deceived by Satan (manifesting that she was a poor leader), in God's government women are barred from taking the place of authority and teaching. They are to learn in silence and subjection. A woman, then, is never to take a public place as a recognized teacher of God's Word or to teach in the Assembly or anywhere in mixed audiences where she takes a place of equality with or is set over men, for then she is usurping authority over man.

We find, however, that Titus 2:3, 4 instructs elder women to be "teachers of good things," and "That they may teach the young women," etc. Here elder women are given the right to teach, but the sphere is defined to young women and the teaching is rather of an informal character on practical subjects pertaining more to the home and family (v. 3-5). Helping ignorant women on Scripture and free intercourse with them on the Word is quite proper. One would encourage sisters to labor diligently for the Lord in such spheres. Even the quiet communication of the Gospel in conversation with men is proper for a woman, if done in a modest becoming way Such work, of course, may slip into formal teaching, and then a woman is out of her place. If she sets up a regular public teaching lecture on Scripture, even if only women were present, we believe it would be taking the place of a teacher and a violation of I Timothy 2:12" I suffer not a woman to teach."

Teaching the Bible to children and praying and singing with them is also a proper and valuable service for women. Such work begins in the home and is continued in the Sunday School and in children's meetings. The Sunday School in the Assembly is simply an enlargement of a family gathering, removed from the home to larger and more convenient quarters. Therefore, it would be quite proper for sisters to teach Sunday School classes of children or young women, especially when they are in charge of brethren under whose direction they serve. When young brothers or any brethren are part of a Sunday School, we believe it would be against Scripture for any sister to be the superintendent of the School, for that would be exercising authority over the man.

L. M. GrantMinistry: do we practice it rightly?

We may add to this another suggestion that seems deeply needed today. Young brethren who have some ability to speak and who desire to serve the Lord should surely be given every proper encouragement. Yet it is unseemly that they should begin by becoming teachers of the saints. How much more solid and stable would their progress be if they do what they can in reaching out with the gospel to the lost. We would greatly advocate work with children as an excellent training ground for young men. If, together with women also in the assembly, they are able to awaken interest in boys and girls to come to children's meetings, young men may take the lead in making these gatherings spiritually attractive to the young. Women also often prove to be excellent teachers of children. Let us never think lightly of this good and valuable work, but seek to prove faithful in the smallest details of it. Concern for these dear young souls will drive teachers to study their Bibles in order to get the simplest things across to their developing minds. So that in feeding others, their own souls will be fed.

There are some persons who say, “Let the children grow up; let them get to years of understanding; there are parts of the scriptures which I do not understand myself, and how then can I communicate them to my children?” But, beloved friends, here we have the fact that these holy women of old, Eunice and Lois, took the little babe Timothy, and they sowed in his heart the seeds of a new life, while they communicated to him those holy writings which when he was advanced to the superior knowledge of Christianity he had not to surrender, but still to maintain. They were still to be a guide to him. Therefore we ought and it is a serious responsibility that we should instruct our children in the truths of holy scripture, since they are able to make them “wise to salvation.”

Leslie M. GrantComments On First Timothy

1 Corinthians 14 is clear that the woman is not to speak at all in the assembly. In our present chapter it is shown that teaching is not for her, whether in the assembly or elsewhere, if any public character of things is involved. At least, if men are present, it is not the woman's place to teach. The instructing of women or of children in less public circumstances could hardly come under the same restriction, but the woman must be careful that her teaching in any case does not put her in a place of any kind of prominence. It is in fact her glory to be in quietness. The reason for this given here is to be closely observed! Adam was first formed, then Eve. It is-simply order in God's creation, with no question of moral superiority or inferiority involved at all, nor any question of ability. It is God's order, and any infraction thereof is disorder.

William Kelly1 Timothy

But there is more here. "I permit not a woman to teach, nor to exercise authority over a man, but to be in quietness." This clearly is not limited to the assembly; as the apostle traces the ground of it in the constitution and natural character of woman. "For Adam was first formed, then Eve." Her subsequent formation out of the man is never to be forgotten by such as fear God and believe His word. All other thoughts are presumptuous theory in forgetfulness of the truth which goes up to the beginning. An individual woman may be comparatively able and well-instructed; but under no circumstances is leave given for a woman to teach or to have dominion over a man; she is to be in quietness. Thus absolutely does the apostle guard against any reaction from the abject place of women in ancient times, specially among the heathen; or any imitation of the peculiar prominence given to her sometimes in oracular matters, as among the Greeks and especially the Germans of old.

These verses apply to a wider sphere than that of the gathered Assembly. They speak of proper conduct as between man and woman and would include any public testimony where both sexes are present. They refer to public teaching of mixed audiences, for exercising authority over man is spoken of. Woman is never to set herself up as a teacher or to teach in meetings of mixed sexes, for then man is at her feet as a learner, which is reversing God's order.

Eric TachoiresThe role of women

b) A woman should not exercise authority over a man - that's why teaching by a woman in the presence of a man is excluded anyway. This second part indicates a complementary aspect but does not diminish or exclude the first part (point a).

Whether there are men present or not, believing women are not allowed to teach.

Eric TachoiresThe role of women

"To teach" in 1 Timothy 2 involves "presenting the Word" to an audience and is not allowed for women, regardless of the audience.

Arno Clemens GaebeleinThe First Epistle To Timothy

The Christian woman must bear a testimony in an outward manner that she is separated from these things. Then he gives the charge about the teaching authority of women. "Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." This is and belongs to the wholesome, sound doctrine. Woman has her sphere of service, of laboring in the gospel and also teaching the truth, among her own sex and children. But the place of authority does not belong to her; she is not to usurp authority, nor to exercise it. This is the divine order, that the authority to teach is vested in the man. (See 1 Corinthians 11 and 14). "For Adam was first formed, then Eve." This is creation's order, which must be maintained on the ground of redemption.

And the fall teaches another lesson. "And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression." The able expositor Bengel wrote on this: "More easily deceived, she more easily deceives." When she leaves the place given her according to this apostolic charge, she is easily deceived, and then in turn easily deceives others. The second epistle speaks of "silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts." Women rejecting sound doctrine, usurping authority, have become instruments of the enemy, by inventing Satanic doctrines and perverting the truth of God.

  • 1 Timothy 2:11–1511Let a woman learn in quietness in all subjection; 12but I do not suffer a woman to teach nor to exercise authority over man, but to be in quietness; 13for Adam was formed first, then Eve 14and Adam was not deceived; but the woman, having been deceived, was in transgression. 15But she shall be preserved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and love and holiness with discretion.
  • 1 Corinthians 14:34–3534Let [your] women be silent in the assemblies, for it is not permitted to them to speak; but to be in subjection, as the law also says. 35But if they wish to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is a shame for a woman to speak in assembly.
  • Titus 2:3–53that the elder women in like manner be in deportment as becoming those who have to say to sacred things, not slanderers, not enslaved to much wine, teachers of what is right; 4that they may admonish the young women to be attached to [their] husbands, to be attached to [their] children, 5discreet, chaste, diligent in home work, good, subject to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be evil spoken of.
