In the upper room, after the Lord told His own that He was going to the Father's house to prepare a place, Thomas protested that they neither knew the destination nor the way. The Lord's answer in John 14:6 lifts the question off the level of geography and onto the level of His own Person: He Himself is the way, the goal is the Father, and entrance is exclusive.
The disciples had been thinking about a place; Christ turns them to a Person. They knew the Father's house because they knew Him.
James BoydBut Thomas was greatly mistaken, for they knew where He was going, by knowing Himself. In Him they had learned everything that gave character to the place... We know divine things by knowing divine Persons. The way to become acquainted with the place is to become acquainted with the Person who is in the place.
The very form of the saying tells us man had wandered off; the Lord does not point to a road, He is the road.
Magazines"I am the way, the truth, and the life." There is no other way to God. The fact of Christ saying He is the way, declares that man has lost the way. What man wanted was a way back to God, to the Father; and Christ says, "I am that way."
And it is a way opened by His blood:

Christ alone has expressed reality as it truly is, of God and of man.
William KellyThe truth is the full bringing out of what a person or thing is. It is the expression of objects in their reality... wherever the thing is set out as it really is, there you have the truth. Christ is the only one who has ever done it objectively... When you have Christ, you have the truth, and not otherwise.
So if Christ is unknown, every other judgment goes wrong:

- Lost and recovered. That Christ must say "I am the way" admits man has lost it; the way home is opened only through His blood as the new and living way.
- Truth defined. Truth is the full setting forth of any reality as it truly is; Christ alone has done this — without Him every judgment about God, man, time and eternity is false.
- One indivisible Christ. He is THE way, THE truth, THE life — not a portion of any of them; you cannot take Him as one without receiving Him as all three.
- Exclusive yet open. The verse shuts out all human effort at its best, and at the same time opens the Father — not just God in sovereign grace — to the proudest Jew and most debased Gentile through the Son alone.

Spoken in the upper room on the eve of the cross, John 14:27 is the Lord's parting bequest to His own as He prepares them for His departure. Two questions rise from the verse: what kind of peace is left, and why is its source unlike anything the world can offer?
Commentators are careful to distinguish the two clauses. They are not a poetic doubling but two real gifts:
MagazinesThere are two characters of peace presented to us in this verse. "Peace I leave with you" is not the same thing as "My peace I give unto you." Peace we need in every form. Peace we need first of all for the conscience, and the Lord would set the consciences of His disciples happy and free before God. Now this was one, and indeed we may say the main, object of our Lord's coming here — specially of His death. As we are told elsewhere, "He made peace through the blood of his cross."
The first is peace for us, settled at the cross; the second is the peace of Christ Himself, shared with us:
MagazinesChrist never needed the peace which we did as having been at enmity with God; and yet was it His to enjoy peace, after a sort, which had never been before. Therefore He adds, not merely, "Peace I leave with you," but, "My peace I give unto you," the peace which He ever enjoyed, which reigned within Him and lit up all around Him.
The first half of the verse looks back to Calvary. It is the righteous portion of the believer:
MagazinesJesus "leaves" peace with us as a last legacy that comes to us from His death, peace the righteously won portion for the soul that believes in His name.
The second half lifts the disciple into the very atmosphere Christ Himself walked in. William Kelly draws this out plainly:
William KellyThroughout the Lord supposes His death. This was necessary to peace; His own peace goes farther still. It was the peace He enjoyed while here — a peace unruffled by circumstances, and in unbroken communion with His Father; a peace as far as possible from man's heart, in such a world as this... He Who gives it gave it not away, and had it not the less because we were to receive it. Like all else that He gives, it is enjoyed unimpaired in its own Divine fulness, every one that shares rather adding to it than taking from it.
This deeper boon flows fresh from His own heart:
Magazines"My peace" seems to be a deeper and more personal boon, not procured by His work only, but fresh from His own heart which was ever filled with it to overflowing. It supposes the peace that He has made for us by the blood of His cross and left to us; but it follows on and puts us wondrously in communion with Himself, enjoying now the peace He Himself enjoyed.
The world's giving always costs the giver and rarely satisfies the receiver; Christ's giving brings the receiver into His own enjoyment without loss:
J. N. Darby"Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you, not as the world giveth, give I unto you." The way that Christ gives is to bring us into the enjoyment of all that He enjoys Himself. "In the world ye shall have tribulation." He leaves us His own path.
A magazine writer adds that biblical peace is not the world's "absence of war" but something stronger — peace in the midst of war — the very calm that marked the Lord at the breaking of bread when "all Satan's power and more was about to be let loose upon Him" (Magazines).
The verse closes with a holy logic. If His peace is ours, fear has no footing:

Darby points to the inner certainty of this:
J. N. DarbyIn Christ I see a divine heart, reflecting the perfect certainty of a love whose perfection cannot be questioned. It is peace. Now He says to us, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you."
- Two peaces. "Peace I leave" settles the conscience through the blood of the cross; "My peace I give" admits us into Christ's own communion with the Father.
- A legacy. The first peace is the disciple's righteously-won portion, bequeathed from His death.
- A shared atmosphere. The second is the very calm that ruled in Christ — unruffled by circumstance, undiminished by being shared.
- Unlike the world. The world's gifts cost the giver and fail the receiver; Christ brings us into the enjoyment of all He enjoys Himself.
- The cure for fear. Possessing His peace, the believer has no rational ground to be troubled or afraid.
Ye have heard that I have said unto you, I go away and I am coming to you. If ye loved me ye would rejoice that I go to the Father, for [my] Father is greater than I.

In the upper room, with the cross hours away, Jesus tells His disciples the highest measure of love a man can show — and quietly puts His own death forward as the example that defines the word. The verse both reveals the cost of His love and binds that love to the obedience He looks for in His friends.
The verse names the outermost limit of human affection, but the commentary insists Christ's love overflowed even that limit.
William KellyGreater love none has than to lay down his life for his friends. The love of God in Jesus went infinitely beyond this; but then necessarily it stands alone, and it is meet that it should. We ought to lay down our lives for the brethren, as we are taught elsewhere. But where is the worth of such a theory if we fail in everyday going out of heart to common wants and sufferings of God's children (1 John 3:17-18)?
James BoydGreater love, the Lord Himself has said, has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends; and though those few disciples to whom He said these words were His friends, in the day in which He laid down His life for them, we can say, "When we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son"… when there was nothing in our hearts toward Him but hatred, not even the shame, the gibbet, the curse, the wrath, the abandonment of God, could quench the love that burned in His heart toward us.
The verse is not primarily about how Christ won enemies, but about the new footing on which He places His own.
William KellyIt is not reconciling enemies He speaks of, but why He calls us His friends. Obedience is the character and condition. Nor does He here indicate how He stood as our friend when we were enemies, but He calls us His friends if we practise what He enjoins on His disciples.

DarbyHe does not say He is the friend of sinners here; He speaks of their being His friends if they did what He commanded… The true disciple He treats with the confidence of being His friend, otherwise He was betraying the confidence of His Father in telling His secrets. If I go to a person on a matter of business, I merely tell him my business, and have done with him; but if I go to a friend, I can tell him all that is on my own mind… What a place He sets us in!
The verse defines what kind of love Jesus means when He says "love one another as I have loved you."
J. N. Darby"This is my commandment, that ye love one another, even as I have loved you." That is, self-giving-up love, true love. "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." Now, the Lord is not here speaking of His love to enemies, the manner of God's love to the world, but His love to His friends… connected with their keeping His commandments, universal obedience.
The verse anchors what John later draws out in his epistle — death is love's highest language.
MagazinesDeath is the greatest act of sacrifice by which love can be expressed… In order to express divine love, Christ has gone to the utmost limit of self-sacrifice. No consideration could deter Him from entering into all that we were liable to by the just judgment of God. The wrath of man was there and the dread power of Satan also. He perfectly understood and measured what lay before Him and entered into it that the mighty unfathomable love of His heart might be known. No man took His life from Him, He laid it down of Himself.
Read alongside John 14:31, the verse shows that every step toward Calvary was prompted by love — both for the Father and for His own.

The Lord's measure becomes the disciple's measure, scaled to ordinary need.

- Supreme limit. Death for one's friends is the highest love a man can show, and Christ alone fulfilled it perfectly.
- Beyond the verse. His love actually overflowed this limit — He died while we were still enemies, and that stands alone.
- Friendship's condition. Here He defines why He calls them friends: obedience to His commands is the character and condition.
- Love as commandment. "Love one another as I have loved you" means self-giving-up love, modeled at the cross.
- Practical measure. The same love that laid down life for the brethren must show itself in everyday compassion to a brother in need.

John 16:33 closes the Lord's farewell address to His disciples on the night of His betrayal — a parting word designed to brace their hearts before the cross, and to leave every believer with a settled refuge. Two spheres are placed side by side: "in Me" — peace; "in the world" — tribulation; and over both stands the triumphant declaration, "I have overcome the world."
The verse provides a resource that nothing in the disciples themselves or in their circumstances can disturb. Hamilton Smith draws out the pastoral force of the words:
Hamilton SmithIf the Lord will warn the disciples of their weakness, He will not leave them without one last word of cheer and encouragement. Whatever failure in themselves they may have to deplore, whatever trials in the world they may have to meet, yet, in Christ they would have peace. They may find much in themselves, and much in the world to disturb them, but in Christ they would have an unfailing resource — One in whom their hearts could rest in perfect peace. The world may indeed overcome the disciples, as they are shortly to prove, but Christ has overcome the world.
William Kelly carefully separates this habitual tribulation of the saints from the prophetic "great tribulation" appointed for Israel. He also weds the verse to 1 John 5, which makes faith itself the principle of victory:
William KellyIn the world tribulation was to be their portion, not as for the Jew retributively at a specified and measured hour (Jer. 30:7; Dan. 12:1; Matt. 24:21; Mark 13:19) at the time of the end... but habitually for those not of the world, and hence a prey in it. Yet are they called to courage, as knowing Him Whom they have believed... What a spring and cheer, that we have to overcome a foe already overcome! He indeed alone; we looking to Him Who gives power for all things. And this is the victory that overcometh the world, our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:5)
A magazine writer presses the point that the peace promised here is not the world's peace — the mere absence of conflict — but a positive, divine calm enjoyed while the storm rages:
MagazinesIf you consult the dictionary you will find that peace is defined as the absence of war. That is the highest to which dictionaries can reach. But if you read your Bible you get a different thought. Briefly stated, Bible peace is peace in the midst of war. This is very arresting. One could not imagine for a moment that our God is at all disturbed or caught unawares by any storm down here... This is what characterised the Lord Jesus in His holy pathway here.
The same word is searching for those who walk after the disciples. Faith in the Son of God who has overcome is the only thing that holds steady:
MagazinesWe, beloved brethren, have received the Holy Ghost, and (1 John 5:4-5) divinely given faith in the Son of God, who has overcome the world. Are we, in practice and in truth, walking so that our peace is in Him? I mean the peace of a heart truly dependent upon Him in the midst of tribulation. (v. 33.)... Victory over the world is attached to this true faith; all else must end in utter confusion.
This verse stands as the grand conclusion to the upper room ministry of John 13–16, lifting the eye off self and circumstances and fixing it on the victorious Christ:
Hamilton SmithThus the disciples, and ourselves, may be of good cheer, for the One who loves us, who lives for us, who is coming for us — the One who is with us — is the One who has overcome the world. Thus as the great discourses reach their end we are left with a word of encouragement that, lifting us above all our failure, leaves us in the contemplation of the victory of the Lord.
- Two spheres. "In Me" the believer finds peace; "in the world" he meets tribulation — both are normal Christian experience, never one without the other.
- Habitual, not prophetic. The tribulation of John 16:33 is the steady pressure of a hostile world on those not of it, distinct from the future "great tribulation" appointed to Israel.
- Peace amid war. Bible peace is not the absence of conflict but a divine calm kept undisturbed while the storm rages, the very calm seen in Christ Himself.
- Faith is the victory. The believer overcomes a foe already overcome; 1 John 5:5 names faith in the Son of God as the working principle.
- Cheer above failure. The verse closes the upper room discourse by lifting the eye off self and disciples' weakness and fixing it on the triumphant Christ.
