What role does Iran play in the end times?

The land we now call Iran appears in Scripture under two ancient names: Persia and Elam. Both carry distinct prophetic significance, and together they place Iran at the centre of several end-time events — as an ally in the great northern invasion of Ezekiel 38–39, and as a nation that will ultimately be restored by God's grace.

Persia as an Ally of Gog

The most direct reference to Iran's future role comes in Ezekiel 38:5, where Persia is named as one of the nations that will march alongside Gog in the great end-time invasion of the land of Israel. This confederation descends upon a regathered and apparently defenceless Israel "like a cloud to cover the land" (Ezek. 38:16).

Walter Scott draws out the scope of this confederation:

The Prophet of visions tells us of Persia, Ethiopia, and many other nations coming down under the leadership of Gog "like a cloud to cover the land." The apparently defenceless state of Judea, its numerous and thriving villages, having neither walls, bars, nor gates, seem to offer an easy prey to the nations, while the world's wealth, centralised in the Jew, will awaken the cupidity of the powers (Ezek. 38:10-13). To plunder and destroy are the objects of this mighty confederation.

Walter Scott

Scott also identifies Persia's position in this alliance:

Persia, Ethiopia, etc., are under the power of Russia and follow in the train of Gog, the last ruler of the Russian peoples (Ezek. 38:2-6).

Writing in Our Standard and Witness, the article on "The Assyrian in Prophecy" traces the full extent of Gog's coalition:

All the hordes from the north are with Gog, also his allies from Persia, Libya and Ethiopia; Sheba, Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish are ready to trade with him; but the power of the local Assyrian appears to have been already broken, and all that marked him is found fully expressed in Gog.

So in the prophetic picture, Persia (Iran) is not the leader of the end-time northern invasion — that role belongs to Gog, the Prince of Rosh — but it is a key military ally, part of the vast confederation that sweeps down upon Israel.

The Destruction of Gog's Armies — and Persia with Them

A. J. Pollock, in his study of end-time events, places this invasion after the beast and his western armies have already been destroyed at Armageddon. Israel is dwelling safely in the land when Gog descends:

From Ezekiel 38:8 we learn that this invasion is "in the latter years," and that they shall come "into a land brought back, from the sword gathered out of many people ... and they shall dwell safely all of them." This is evidently after the beast and his armies have been destroyed.

A. J. Pollock

He describes the invaders' overconfidence:

This is emphasised in Ezekiel 38:11, where Gog says, "I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates." There is not a sign of the expectation of conflict, and not a vestige of preparation for defence.

And the catastrophic divine judgment that follows:

God's presence will be felt in that day, for "there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel," with terrible upheavals. Many shall perish on the mountains of Israel; some shall be slain with the swords of their allies, some by the pestilence, some by rain, hailstones, fire and brimstone, from heaven.

The judgment extends even to the homelands of the invaders:

The lands from which the armies have come will not escape, for God "will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles."

Persia, as one of the key allies of Gog, shares in this complete overthrow.

Elam — Iran's Ancient Name and Its Own Prophecy

Before it was ever called Persia, the region was known as Elam, after the firstborn son of Shem (Gen. 10:22). Morrish's Bible Dictionary notes the close identification:

Cyrus was king of Anshan, or Anzan (Elam) as well as of Persia: hence the close connection, and almost identification of Elam with Persia. In scripture Elam often designates Persia.

Elam

Elam has its own dedicated prophecy in Jeremiah 49:34–39, where God declares He will smite and scatter Elam, set His throne there in judgment, and then — remarkably — restore it. W. E. Vine draws attention to the promise that closes this passage:

A special word was given to the prophet concerning Elam early in the reign of Zedekiah (v. 34). No reason is given for the smiting and scattering of Elam, but it is done in justice and judgment, for the Lord of hosts sets His throne there (v. 38). In the last verse is added a similar word to that which was said of Egypt, Moab, and Ammon, but not of the others: "In the latter days, I will bring again the captivity of Elam, says the Lord."

Vine then connects this to the millennial picture:

When Israel turns to the Lord and is delivered and established in her proper pre-eminence among the nations with our Lord Jesus Christ as her glorious King, then shall these broken nations be delivered also; reappearing according to God's gracious promises they will form the national garden of Eden again, of which Ezekiel speaks, the paradise of administrative beauty and excellence of which Christ will be the honoured Centre.

W. Kelly makes the same observation:

These nations were all to fall under the power of Nebuchadnezzar; but some of them are to be restored in the latter day. Among these nations will be Elam, Egypt, Moab and Ammon, but not Philistia, not Damascus, not Hazor, and above all not Babylon.

W. Kelly

Kelly further notes in his study of Genesis 10:

However ravaged in the past (Ezek. 32:24-25, and Jer. 49:34-38), Elam will have its captivity brought again in the latter days according to Jer. 49:39.

Persia in Daniel — From Kindness to Hostility

Persia's historical role is strikingly different from its end-time posture. The Medo-Persian empire was the second of the four great world-empires — the silver of the image (Dan. 2), the bear (Dan. 7), and the two-horned ram (Dan. 8). W. Kelly explains why Daniel 8 uses clean animals to represent Persia and Greece:

Persia and Greece, who alone were kind to God's ancient people, are here marked off, because of their treatment to Israel, in contrast with the other powers who were cruel. If the Babylonians took Judah captive, Cyrus the Persian it was who gave commandment for the remnant to return.

W. Kelly

The Our Standard and Witness on Daniel's empires echoes this:

"Another beast, a second, like to a bear" is no doubt the Medo-Persian empire... although, in the over-ruling of God, Israel had generous treatment from them. Cyrus gave command to rebuild the temple; Darius confirmed the decree of Cyrus; Artaxerxes helped Ezra and those who returned with him.

The historical Persia served God's purposes by releasing Israel from Babylon. But when the same land reappears in Ezekiel's prophecy of the last days, it is in a very different posture — as part of the coalition bent on Israel's destruction.

Elam and the Regathering of Israel

One further connection ties Iran to the end times. When God regathers His scattered people, Elam is specifically named in Isaiah 11:11 as one of the regions from which the remnant will be recovered. The Our Standard and Witness commentary explains:

The regathering will be from the same regions, Assyria, Elam and Shinar; the two latter being Persia and Babylon.

Elam

Iran's prophetic role, then, unfolds in three stages. First, as Persia, it serves as a key ally in Gog's great northern invasion of Israel in the last days (Ezek. 38–39), joining the vast confederation that descends upon a seemingly defenceless, regathered people — and sharing in the catastrophic divine judgment that annihilates those armies on the mountains of Israel. Second, as Elam, it has its own specific prophecy of judgment in Jeremiah 49:34–39, where God sets His throne in that land and scatters its people. But the prophetic word does not end with judgment: Jeremiah 49:39 promises that "in the latter days, I will bring again the captivity of Elam." Iran, like Egypt and Assyria, is a nation that, after passing through God's refining judgments, will ultimately be brought into blessing under the reign of Christ. The land that once released Israel from Babylon under Cyrus, that later joins the enemies of Israel under Gog, will in the end find its place in the restored order of the millennial kingdom.
