What is Christ consciousness?
"Christ consciousness" is a phrase used outside the Bible for a divine awareness said to sleep inside every person, waiting to be awakened. Scripture never uses it — but it does speak of "the mind of Christ" and of Christ living in a believer, and the difference between those two ideas decides everything.
The claim behind the phrase
The idea of a shared divine awareness in all people is not new. One writer records the teaching in almost the exact terms people still use today:

"Christ's pantheism," we are told, "is the conscious union of the human with the divine spirit in truth, love and joy." As to what man is, we are told, "you cannot resist His influence, you may deny His doctrines, you may even hate and repudiate His name, but He goes straight into your hearts and leavens your lives. He does not care to enquire what doctrine you believe, or what dogma you accept, nor even what sort of life you lead."
The answer given is not philosophy but history. If every heart already carried Christ within, the record of His life should show it:

The One whom "every heart must receive" was crucified — He was "despised and rejected by men … and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not"; Jews and Gentiles join in crucifying Him; one of His disciples betrays Him, another denies Him, and all abandon Him. History proves the opposite of Mr. Sen's statements. Conscience may be struck by the perfection of Christ, a perfection seen only there; the mind may be convinced by proofs, and the heart may even weep over innocence — but Christ dismisses all this as useless. The revelation of God draws out the hostility of the human heart. Man must be born anew.
No inner light already in man
Some read John 1:9 as proof that a divine light shines in everyone. That reading is challenged directly:

But it goes beyond Scripture to boast of the great soul of man, and it is against Scripture to say that it is the light which lights every man. For this is Christ alone; and the real meaning of John 1:9 is that the True Light, coming into the world, lights up, or sheds light on, every man.
What the Bible actually offers
Scripture does promise something staggeringly close to what people are reaching for — but as a gift, with a limit:

So Paul says, writing not to the Ephesians or the Philippians but even to the Corinthians, "We have the mind of Christ" — the intelligence of Christ, the capacity of spiritual understanding (1 Cor. 2:16). Not, of course, that we have the same measure as the Lord, who had and was Himself the wisdom of God, and this absolutely. We have nothing except in and through Him, and so only in dependence on Him.
Received, not awakened
The dividing line is not effort or awareness but whether a person has the Spirit of God:

He does not receive the things of the Spirit of God; he considers them foolish, because he has no capacity for knowing them. Not having that spiritual capacity, it is impossible for him to grasp spiritual things. But the Christian, as having the Holy Spirit, and the state the Spirit gives, has the mind of Christ.
Not the old self merged into God
Merger language — the human spirit blending into the divine — is ruled out plainly:

On the contrary, we are dead and gone as to this, and Christ is our life, and so we belong to heaven, where He is, though we are not yet there.
Reproduced, not imitated
Philippians 2:5 tells believers to have the mind that was in Christ. That is not self-improvement:
Arno Clemens Gaebelein"Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus." The Spirit of Christ is in the believer for this very purpose — not that we should be imitators of Christ, but that His own life may be reproduced in us.
Why the counterfeit matters
Teaching that reshapes who Jesus is has a long history, and it rarely arrives looking dangerous:
Hamilton SmithWith satanic subtlety, these men perverted the truth by preaching "another Jesus," "another Spirit," and "another gospel" (v. 4). Further, the Apostle foresaw that if the assemblies tolerated these evil workers among them, the Christian circle would be corrupted from simplicity as to Christ.
Summary
- Claim. "Conscious union of the human with the divine spirit" is an old idea; the cross tested it, and the world crucified the One every heart was supposed to welcome.
- Correction. The light is Christ Himself shining on every man, not a light already burning inside every man.
- Gift. What God gives instead is real: the intelligence of Christ, by the Holy Spirit — never in His measure, and only in dependence on Him.
- Entry. It is not awakened by insight; the natural man has no capacity for it, and Christ said a person must be born anew.
- Result. Not the old self absorbed into God, but Christ as your life, His own life reproduced in you.
