Is Jesus Yahweh? Is Jesus Jehovah?
The answer to this question is a resounding yes — and this identification runs through the entire fabric of Scripture, not just a handful of proof-texts.
The Name Itself: "Jesus" Means "Jehovah the Saviour"
The very name given to Christ at His birth declares who He is. Edward Dennett traces this in his study of the divine names:
Edward DennettAs may be seen from Hebrews 4:8, Jesus is the Greek form of Joshua, or Jehoshua, which signifies "Jehovah is salvation," or "whose salvation is Jehovah." There is therefore ample justification for the common observation that the name Jesus means Jehovah the Saviour. If so, what a subject for contemplation, yea, and for adoration, is thus brought before our souls! A child born into the world, of lowly parentage in man's esteem, is declared, divinely declared, to be Jehovah the Saviour!
J. N. Darby makes the same point, then traces what follows:
J. N. DarbyHis name is called Jesus — Jehoshua, that is, Jehovah the Saviour, for He shall save His people — who, and whose people, in connection with the explanation of such a name? Christ is the Jehovah of the Old Testament. Thus John 12, Isaiah saw His glory, and spoke of Him, quoting Isaiah 6. Whose glory was seen there? Jehovah of hosts.
Old Testament Prophecies About Jehovah Fulfilled in Jesus
One of the strongest lines of evidence is that what the Old Testament says of Jehovah, the New Testament attributes to Jesus.
Norman Anderson writes on Isaiah 40:
Norman AndersonJohn was sent to prepare Jehovah's way, and in John 1:30, calling attention to Jesus, the Baptist said; "This is He of whom I said, After me cometh a man who is preferred before me; for He was before me," an evident pointer to the pre-time glory of the Person of the Son of God. The Jesus of the New Testament is the Jehovah of the Old.
Darby draws out the striking evidence from Zechariah 14, where Jehovah's feet stand on the Mount of Olives — the very place from which Jesus ascended (Acts 1):
Darby"And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives," says the Holy Ghost in Zechariah 14:4; "his feet," the feet of Jehovah. Though indeed He was the man of sorrows, Jesus is Jehovah, and has been so from eternity.
Dennett shows the connection through Revelation 22:13 — where Jesus claims the title "Alpha and Omega":
DennettThe word \[Jehovah\] signifies the self-existent One, and is practically translated, "Who is, and was, and is to come." Derived from the verb "to exist," it expresses the eternity, and, consequently, the immutability, of His being… He is thus the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last; and the use of these expressions (Rev. 22:13) proves, beyond all contradiction, that the Jesus of the New is the Jehovah of the Old Testament.
"I AM" — Jesus Claims the Covenant Name
Darby highlights Jesus' own declaration in John 8:
In John 8 we find, "before Abraham was I AM," in contrast with His age as man; which the Jews perfectly understood, and would have killed Him for blasphemy.
A. J. Pollock, in a dialogue with a Jewish inquirer, presses the point:
A. J. PollockThe Lord said to the Pharisees, "Before Abraham was I am." If that affirmation were not true He was a deceiver and God would never have raised a deceiver from the dead. The resurrection proves that that and all other statements of Christ were true.
Every Knee Shall Bow — Jehovah's Glory Given to Jesus
Darby brings together what may be the most striking convergence of all — Jehovah's oath in Isaiah 45:23 fulfilled at the name of Jesus in Philippians 2:10:
33009EJehovah has sworn that every knee shall bow to Him, and every tongue give an account of himself to God, but it is at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow. Hence, though the Son quickens whom He will, as the Father, yet the Father judges no man, but hath committed all judgment to the Son, that all may honour the Son as they honour Him. There is no God but Jehovah — I know not any, as says the prophet; but we have seen, by multiplied examples that Christ is Jehovah.
The Creator of the Old Testament Is the Christ of the New
James Boyd states the identification through the doctrine of creation:
James BoydIn the Old Testament the Creator is said to be Jehovah, the everlasting God (Isa. 40:28), and in the New Testament the Creator is said to be the Word (John 1) which became flesh; the Son of the Father's love (Col. 1); the Messiah (Heb. 1). The Christ of the New Testament is Jehovah of the Old.
The Same Lord at Sinai and at Calvary
Harold Mawson brings out the startling unity between the God who thundered at Sinai and the Saviour who spoke to Nicodemus:
Harold MawsonCould it be the same Lord who spoke in the thunders of Sinai, who, in tender accents, told Nicodemus, the Pharisee, that, "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son"? Yes, it was the same, for Jesus is Jehovah. And the man who denies it does not know God, but his mind is blinded by his great foe, the devil, lest he should believe and be saved.
The Saving Confession of Faith
Arthur Pridham calls this the very heart of saving faith:
Arthur PridhamThat Jesus is Jehovah is the saving confession of true Christian faith. (Joel 2:32; Rom. 10).
The reference is telling: Joel 2:32 says "whosoever shall call on the name of Jehovah shall be saved," and Romans 10:13 quotes the same verse — applying it to calling on the name of Jesus as Lord.
"He Is the Rock… and Jesus Is Jehovah"
William Kelly writes:
William Kelly"He is the Rock; His work is perfect; for all His ways are righteousness." So an Israelite could say of Jehovah; and Jesus is Jehovah. But He is more, and now more is revealed, especially since He the Word became flesh, and tabernacled among us, full of grace and truth.
Synthesis
The answer is yes — Jesus is Jehovah. The identification rests on converging evidence from across the whole of Scripture:
- The name "Jesus" itself means "Jehovah is salvation."
- Old Testament prophecies about Jehovah — preparing His way (Isa. 40), His feet on the Mount of Olives (Zech. 14), every knee bowing (Isa. 45) — are all fulfilled in Jesus.
- Jesus claimed the divine "I AM" (John 8:58), the covenant name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush.
- What Jehovah alone does — creating all things, forgiving sins, receiving worship — Jesus does in His own right.
- Joel 2:32 promises salvation to all who call on the name of Jehovah; Romans 10:13 applies this to calling on Jesus as Lord.
As Darby concluded: "The more Scripture is gone through, the more comes to light that He is the true God and Eternal Life."
