Judges 6:10 Commentary
And I said to you, ‘I am the LORD your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.’ But you have not obeyed my voice.”
Israel is hiding in caves while Midianite raiders strip their harvests, and the people cry out to God (Judges 6:1-7). Before He raises up Gideon as rescuer, God sends a prophet, and verse 10 is the prophet's closing charge: after all the LORD had done for them, Israel feared the gods of the Amorites and did not obey His voice.
A prophet before a deliverer
The order of events carries the main lesson. God does not send the rescuer first. He sends a preacher.

The charge: God was faithful, Israel was not
The prophet's message lists what God had done. Then comes the one command they broke: do not fear the gods of the Amorites. They had feared and served those false gods anyway. One writer draws out the point:
The Christian's FriendGod had been faithful to Israel, but Israel had not been faithful to God. This was the point of the prophet's testimony. Whenever we find ourselves under the power of our enemies, we must charge the fault on ourselves. We must not charge it on God. Nothing can weaken our hands (take away our strength to act) but sin.
The same article puts God's answer into plain words:
The Christian's Friend'You are crying to me now,' He says in effect, 'because you feel your poverty. But the real cause of your poverty is this: you have sinned against me.' They had no one to blame but themselves.
What the prophet did then, the Word of God does now
Another writer explains how this old scene maps onto God's way with any person today. Back then, prophets carried God's voice; now the written Word does that work:
The Bible TreasuryBefore he comes on the scene as the deliverer, the Lord answers that cry through a prophet. The prophet shows the people how they had departed from Him (Judges 6:8-10). The first great dealing of the Lord with the soul is to show it its failure. The word of God pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit. It is a "discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." Its great action is to reveal to the soul its condition. In that earlier period of God's dealings with people, prophets did what his word does now.
The comfort hidden in the rebuke
The rebuke is not a refusal. It clears the ground for grace. If the disaster came from Israel's own ways, then God Himself had not changed — and help was still there. J T Mawson applies this to anyone crushed by things they cannot shake off:
J T MawsonIf you have come to the end of your own resources, then you have reached the right place for blessing. The end of your resources is the beginning of God's, and to His there is no end. If your soul has become impoverished let Him hear your cry. He is unchanged. Your own ways have brought disaster upon you. The Israelites suffered in the same way for their own disobedience, Judges 6:10.
The very next verse proves it. The moment the prophet names the sin, "the angel of the LORD came" (Judges 6:11) and the call of Gideon begins.
Summary
God's path out of Midian's grip runs in four steps — cry, conviction, confession, cure:
- Cry. Israel cried only from misery, not repentance — yet God in patience heard even that cry.
- Conviction. He answered with a prophet before a deliverer, "to bring their sin home to their conscience." Israel had to own the evil first (Kelly).
- Confession. The fault lay with Israel, not with God — "you have sinned against me." We must charge the fault on ourselves, never on a faithful God (Magazines).
- Cure. Once Israel names its sin, grace moves. The angel comes and God calls Gideon — "the end of your resources is the beginning of God's" (Mawson).
- Still true. What the prophet did then, God's Word does now: it shows the soul its real condition before it heals.
